![]() This Uni-Mind (as Phastos dubs it) is effectively the equivalent of all the Power Rangers teaming up to become the Megazord, and it allows Sersi to turn the planet-sized Tiamut to stone. It seems that becoming the Prime Eternal gave her a bit of a power boost, and Phastos figures out a way to pool the Eternals' collective power into Sersi by making adjustments to the sphere that marks her as the Prime Eternal. It's far from a morally clean decision, and on top of the internal conflict she feels over the decision, Sersi also has to contend with resistance from Ikaris and Sprite (who chooses to join Ikaris because she's secretly been in love with him for thousands of years.)Īt the beginning of "Eternals," Sersi says that her powers can't be used to affect sentient beings - but this is called into question when she rather impressively turns a Deviant into a tree. Moreover, stopping Tiamut from emerging means that all of the worlds and lives that Tiamut would have gone on to create in the universe will now never exist. With that in mind, Tiamut's emergence from Earth isn't an act of malice any more than a baby being born is an act of malice towards its mother. Then one day the Celestial is "born," and that does not go well for the planet it was growing in. As intelligent life evolves and grows on the planet, like humans did, the fetal Celestial draws on the energy being created by the surface-dwelling inhabitants and uses it to grow. The only way that such a being can be created, Arishem tells Sersi, is by planting the seed for a Celestial at the core of a planet. The brain, bone, and other matter from the Celestial's head generates enough wealth to support a small economy on Knowhere, and in a flashback courtesy of the Collector, a Celestial was shown wielding the Power Stone to wipe out an entire planet. The sheer scale of them was first hinted at in "Guardians of the Galaxy," when the ragtag team of space misfits visited the mining colony of Knowhere - built in the empty skull of a dead Celestial. These are the most powerful known entities in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In addition to that, she also apparently taught the wizard Merlin, witnessed the burning of Rome, and took part in the French Revolution. Why? The answer lies in how new Celestials are born. In fact, she can alter matter on the atomic level, much like Atom Eve from Robert Kirkman’s Invincible. This alone makes Sersi one of the most, if not the most, powerful Eternal on Earth. And if you are familiar with the story, she can transform people into animals. In the film’s final moments, the strongest Eternal. Or, to be more precise, she is Cirse from the Greek myths. Last year’s Marvel multi-starrer Eternals, directed by Oscar winner Chloe Zhao, introduced the audiences to the titular race of immortals. Perhaps the reason comic book readers even know about her or the Eternals at all is because of her time on the Avengers.Īs you might have guessed from her name, she’s also the actual inspiration for the sorceress Circe from Homer’s epic poem, The Odyssey. In fact, she’s so involved that she’s had quite a few relationships of the centuries, the most recent being an ongoing on-again, off-again romance with another Marvel superhero and fellow Avenger, Dane Whitman, aka The Black Knight (Kit Harrington). Of all the Eternals, Sersi (Gemma Chan) has consorted with humanity the most. He’s also what’s known as a “Prime Eternal,” making him one the Eternals’ de facto leaders which, in turn, also makes him a key component for causing the transformation into a Uni-Mind. He’s also one the closest things Marvel Comics has to Superman in terms of his powers, including heat vision. That’s because Ikaris has mastered the ability to manipulate his own gravitational field, allowing him to soar in the air at supersonic speeds. In fact, he’s so good he can make others fly so long as they are near him. Only his case, he’s the best flyer of the bunch. Oh, and he’s also the person who really built Noah’s Ark during the Great Flood, too. Him changing his name into a variation of his son’s was his way of honoring and remembering him. And yes, he’s the same Daedalus from Greek mythology who invented flight and whose son, Icarus, died from flying too close to the Sun (in truth, he flew too high into the atmosphere and lost oxygen). Played by Richard Madden in the upcoming film, Ikaris’ actual name is Daedalus. Okay, so what about the various individual Eternals themselves, or least the ones that will appear in the movie? Well, why not start with the one Eternal who always appears front and center whenever there’s a group shot of the Eternals in the comics: Ikaris.
